“I don’t want to retell my story. I hate talking about what happened to me.”

As a trauma therapist, I hear this phrase often. This is commonly what stops most people from going to therapy. Here is my response to when someone says this to me.

Then don’t. You don’t have to tell me your story. You probably don’t know if you can trust me yet. I will meet you where you’re at. You’re a whole person and what happened to you is only a part of your human experience. But...Don’t let your fear stop you from getting therapy.

Therapy can feel scary. It can feel risky telling a stranger your deepest pain. Not wanting to talk, think, or feel about what happened is a symptom of PTSD. But ignoring the pain or how what happened to you won’t make it go away. Do you know what’s scarier than therapy? Continuing to relive your life in the past.

You deserve to enjoy your life. Together we can work towards you building confidence in voicing yourself. You can live a life where your trauma isn’t in the forefront of your mind. What happened to you can feel like a chapter in your book rather than your whole story.
